All Signal. Zero Noise.
THE SIGNAL
Markets went into Wednesday’s session pricing a 94.5% probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike — and got it. The result was a sharp reversal of Tuesday’s energy rally, which had been built on Saudi supply-disruption headlines pushing oil higher. The Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) gave back 2.88% on the session, Occidental (OXY) led sector losses with a 6.55% drop, and Exxon (XOM) and Chevron (CVX) both fell more than 2.8%. Higher-for-longer rates hit rate-sensitive hard assets too: gold miners GOLD (-2.05%) and NEM (-1.96%) slid as the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding metal rose.
The tell wasn’t the losers — it was who didn’t participate in the selloff. Data center infrastructure held firm across the board: Vertiv (VRT) gained 2.05%, Digital Realty (DLR) added 1.00%, and Quanta Services (PWR) rose 0.97%. GE Vernova (GEV) was the day’s standout, up 4.79% on an amicable legal settlement with Vineyard Wind plus fresh bullish notes from Baird and Jefferies tied to its gas-turbine backlog. Defense held a steady bid too — Palantir (PLTR) +1.03%, Lockheed (LMT) +0.71% — while quantum computing, drones, and space names absorbed the brunt of the risk-off rotation.
The single most important read: capital didn’t flee equities wholesale on the hike — it fled duration and speculation while staying anchored to AI power infrastructure. That’s a different market behavior than the “everything sells off on a hike” script from prior cycles, and it’s worth tracking whether it holds.
TODAY’S TOP CALLS
OXY $59.36 (-6.55%) — Occidental led the energy reversal as oil gave back the entire Saudi-disruption premium; this was a sector-wide unwind, not a company-specific headline.
GEV $925.09 (+4.79%) — A Vineyard Wind legal settlement plus fresh Baird and Jefferies buy notes tied to GE Vernova’s gas-turbine backlog made it the tape’s clearest winner.
IBM $237.49 (-4.38%) — IBM underperformed the broader market with no single negative catalyst attached — Zacks flagged it as a sentiment-driven dip ahead of the company’s October 21 earnings date, not a fundamentals story.
