THE SIGNAL
Thursday’s tape drew a clean line down the middle of the market. On one side: AI infrastructure and quantum computing, the two most crowded trades of the last two years, took their sharpest joint hit in months. Micron cracked 5.5%, ASML fell 4%, AMD dropped over 4%, and all three quantum pure-plays — IonQ, D-Wave, Rigetti — lost roughly 4% apiece. On the other side: defense contractors ripped higher in near-unison, with Northrop Grumman up 5.6%, Lockheed up 4.6%, and RTX up nearly 4%. Traditional energy quietly outperformed everywhere.
This isn’t noise — it’s rotation, and the “why” is sitting in the data. Micron’s slide follows reporting that SK Hynix and Samsung plan a combined $575 billion in new memory fab capacity, a threat to the pricing power that’s driven Micron’s run. Quantum names are facing fresh scrutiny over what one report called a “2028 cash test” — the point at which several of these companies’ funding runways get tested against still-distant commercial revenue. Meanwhile defense spending conviction hasn’t wavered, and capital rotated there almost dollar-for-dollar with what came out of chips.
The one name that broke the pattern entirely: AeroVironment, up 10.7% even as it sits under an active securities fraud class action with a July 27 lead-plaintiff deadline. That divergence — a legal overhang this serious paired with a double-digit rally — is the kind of tell worth watching into next week.
TODAY’S TOP CALLS
NOC $549.01 (+5.59%) — Northrop led a broad, unified defense rally with no single catalyst in the news; this reads as sector-wide capital rotation out of AI/tech and into defense value.
MU $975.56 (-5.49%) — Micron’s worst day in weeks came alongside reports of $575B in combined SK Hynix/Samsung capacity expansion, a direct threat to the memory pricing power behind its 2026 run.
AVAV $190.89 (+10.70%) — AeroVironment ripped double digits higher despite sitting under an active securities fraud class action, a disconnect between price action and legal risk worth flagging.
