THE SIGNAL
Tuesday reversed last week's trade almost line for line. The money that hid in crude and the defense primes came back out and went into the AI buildout and the speculative corners of the tape. QQQ $721.25 (+1.27%) led SPY $769.66 (+0.56%), and IWM $280.18 (+1.15%) kept pace with the Nasdaq, so this was not a handful of mega caps carrying the index.
The tell is where the closes landed. The builders that bled for a week closed near their highs: GEV $895.08 (+4.67%) against a $899.33 high, VRT $208.56 (+4.39%) in the upper half of its range. The oil names closed near their lows: XOM $179.91 (-2.51%) against a $179.77 low, and XLE $68.21 (-2.05%) on 31.6 million shares. Per reporting, crude fell on geopolitical developments, and Meta's oversubscribed stock offering, with chipmakers taking part, gave the AI financing question an equity answer instead of a credit one.
That last point matters for the thread we have followed for two weeks: the pressure on the AI builders came from borrowers' credit, not from rates. Tuesday showed what happens when the market sees a funding route that does not run through high-yield bonds. The builders get bid. The open question is whether that holds for the borrowers who cannot sell stock as easily.
TODAY’S TOP CALLS
AMD $560.26 (+5.45%) — The strongest of our chip names, on 20.6 million shares; the AI rebound was led by the processors, not by Nvidia.
GEV $895.08 (+4.67%) — GE Vernova reports today, and it went into the print near the session high, so the bar is now set by Tuesday's bid, not last week's fear.
XOM $179.91 (-2.51%) — Exxon reports Friday and closed near the low of the day; last week's crude bid is being handed back.
