Thursday erased Wednesday’s damage in one session. The tech-led sell-off — driven by GDP-slowdown jitters — reversed hard after Microsoft’s earnings beat showed cloud and AI spending still accelerating, not cracking. Microsoft itself surged roughly 15% and dragged the entire AI-infrastructure complex higher with it, pushing the Nasdaq up over 2% on the day.
The tell that matters more than the index print: this wasn’t a broad, low-conviction bounce. Money rotated hardest into the names most levered to the AI memory shortage story. Micron ripped 18.4% on renewed conviction that HBM pricing power is still under-priced by the market — DRAM and high-bandwidth memory supply can’t keep pace with AI accelerator demand, and that scarcity is now showing up directly in guidance-sensitive names. AMD ran 13% on the same read-through, even as some desks flagged the stock is now stretched at roughly 61x forward earnings versus Nvidia’s 30x.
The other tell: speculative, high-beta names — quantum computing, small-cap space, low-priced drone plays — got dragged along for a much bigger ride than their fundamentals justify on a single day. That’s a risk-on signature, not a fundamentals repricing, and it’s worth remembering the next leg down moves just as fast. Teladoc’s 28% collapse, with no company-specific catalyst in the wires, is the one reminder Thursday wasn’t a rising tide for everything — just for everything AI-adjacent.
