THE SIGNAL
Thursday’s tape had one story, and it wasn’t AI. Lockheed Martin closed at $568.59, up 10.54% on the session — one of the largest single-day moves a defense prime has posted all year. Raytheon parent RTX wasn’t far behind, up 7.33% to $209.16. Northrop added a more modest 1.56%. Meanwhile Palantir, the software name sitting in the same “Defense & AI” bucket, slipped 0.96%. The move was concentrated in hardware and backlog, not algorithms.
We looked for the catalyst. The news we could verify — market-research notes on robotic warfare and drone-market growth, a Palantir-vs-Lockheed valuation comparison — explains the sector’s tailwind over months, not a double-digit pop in a single session. We’re not going to invent an earnings beat or a contract award we can’t confirm. What we can say: the volume and range on LMT and RTX Thursday were real, and a move this size without a headline attached is worth tracking into next week rather than chasing today.
Everywhere else, the tape leaned quieter and more mixed. AI chip names gave back ground — Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, TSMC all closed lower — while Micron bucked the group with a 3.20% gain. Four separate commodities and rare-earth names closed red together, a rare synchronized pullback for a sector that usually trades on its own schedule.
TODAY’S TOP CALLS
LMT $568.59 (+10.54%) — The defense complex’s largest mover, and the session’s headline, even without a confirmed news catalyst behind it.
FCX $63.50 (-2.31%) — Led a broad, same-day pullback across copper, gold, and rare-earth names that’s unusual enough to flag.
AVAV $158.73 (+5.57%) — Broke sharply higher while the rest of the drone and autonomous group (Joby, Archer, Intuitive Machines) closed lower — a name diverging hard from its own sector.
