Tuesday’s close is a positioning story, not a single-name miss. Micron — up roughly 190% in 2026 on AI-driven memory demand — dropped 8.85%, its worst session of the run. AMD fell alongside it, down 8.15% with no company-specific news attached. The move wasn’t isolated to chips: the entire quantum-computing complex broke down together, and Palantir, this year’s other marquee AI name, fell 6.08% on no fresh catalyst either.

D-Wave Quantum (QBTS) is the cleanest read on what actually happened. The stock surged roughly 20% on Monday after announcing an expanded AT&T network-optimization deal — then gave almost half of that gain straight back on Tuesday, closing down 9.61%. Rigetti and IonQ sold off in sympathy with no news of their own. That’s a crowded trade unwinding, not a fundamentals story.

The tell isn’t the selling — it’s what didn’t happen. Defense names (Lockheed, Northrop, RTX) sat essentially flat rather than catching a flight-to-safety bid, while two of 2026’s forgotten laggards, IBM and Teladoc, quietly posted the day’s best gains. When the year’s most crowded winners crack on the same session and money doesn’t obviously rotate into “safe” names, that argues for exhaustion in the winners rather than fear in the market. Whether Wednesday brings a bounce or a second leg down should clarify which.
