THE SIGNAL
Tuesday’s tape had a clean split. Bond yields pushed to multi-year highs even as crude oil fell, consumer confidence dropped to 81.9 (missing estimates of 89.1, a 12.5-month low), and job openings declined. Indexes closed lower across the board, but the real damage was concentrated: pre-profit, long-duration growth names got sold hard while capital rotated toward businesses with near-term, contracted demand.
The tell is in our watchlist. Every unprofitable “story stock” in the space and drone complex fell 2-4% — the exact cohort punished first when the discount rate on future cash flows moves against it. Meanwhile ASML, sitting on a hard demand signal (a positive earnings-surprise setup ahead of its October 14 print, plus peer KLA disclosing an AI-driven backlog surge), was one of the day’s few large-cap winners. When yields spike, the market doesn’t punish “AI” as a theme — it punishes the names asking investors to wait longest to get paid.
The one name that didn’t fit the pattern: Recursion Pharmaceuticals jumped nearly 9% on heavy activity with no same-day news to explain it — worth flagging, not yet worth trusting.
TODAY’S TOP CALLS
RKLB $69.70 (-3.45%) — Rocket Lab led the space-sector selloff Zacks flagged by name in its Tuesday market wrap, underperforming the broader index decline by a wide margin even with an intact $2.36B backlog. Duration risk, not fundamentals, drove the move.
ASML $1,834.39 (+3.56%) — The session’s standout large-cap gainer, lifted by a positive earnings-surprise signal ahead of its October 14 report and a peer (KLA) disclosing AI-driven backlog growth that implicitly confirms ASML’s own demand pipeline.
RXRX $4.03 (+8.92%) — Recursion Pharmaceuticals was the day’s single biggest percentage mover in either direction, on volume, with no fresh company-specific news to point to. Flagging the move; not assigning it a cause.
