THE SIGNAL
Advanced Micro Devices closed Friday at $514.39, up 6.50% on a session that ran from Thursday’s $483.01 close to a $514.67 intraday high — no single headline behind it beyond continued conviction in the AI-compute buildout, with two separate Motley Fool pieces this week on AMD’s decade-long return profile and why “everyone is talking about” the stock. Broadcom moved the opposite direction in the same session, in the same sector, riding the same AI-infrastructure narrative: down 5.94% to $392.99, slicing through the $400 level it had held since Thursday’s $417.82 close. Two chip stocks, one shared story, opposite outcomes. That’s not a sector call — that’s the market pricing individual companies again.
Doximity gave the clearest evidence of that shift. It was the worst performer on the entire 41-ticker tape, down 6.73% to $24.80 — a hard reversal after two separate AI-driven surges earlier this month (+32.6% on August 8 after its clinical AI assistant topped independent accuracy rankings, another leg higher on August 11). No new negative headline explains Friday’s drop. It reads like profit-taking after a run that got ahead of itself, and it wasn’t alone: every name in Emerging Healthcare closed red, with Recursion (-4.53%) and Teladoc (-2.16%) sliding in sympathy.
The names that avoided the reversal were the ones with a concrete, dated catalyst attached. Intuitive Machines was the single biggest mover in the report, up 8.26% to $19.01 after NASA awarded roughly $600 million in new lunar-lander contracts this month, with Intuitive Machines named the lowest-risk of the three winners. MP Materials ran 5.53% on continued rare-earth strength. And the physical side of the AI trade — data centers, power, energy — closed green almost everywhere: Equinix up 2.64%, Vertiv up 2.36%, the whole Oil & Gas sector positive. Infrastructure kept its bid. Story stocks without a fresh catalyst didn’t.
TODAY’S TOP CALLS
AMD $514.39 (+6.50%) — Broke out to a new high the same day its closest sector peer broke down, the clearest sign the AI-compute trade is now being priced stock-by-stock, not as a basket.
DOCS $24.80 (-6.73%) — The day’s worst performer on the full tape, giving back a chunk of two separate AI-driven surges earlier this month with no new headline attached.
LUNR $19.01 (+8.26%) — The day’s best performer, riding NASA’s roughly $600 million round of lunar-lander contract awards.
