THE SIGNAL
Friday cooled off Thursday’s furious AI melt-up — but unevenly, and the split matters more than the headline index move. Vertiv pushed to a fresh high on continued conviction in data-center cooling and power demand, and Nvidia extended its gain in a tight, orderly range. Micron did the opposite: it gave back nearly a third of Thursday’s 18% single-session surge as investors reassessed the near-term memory story against fresh reporting that Amazon, Walmart, and Uber are all capping internal AI spending to control costs — the first real signal that hyperscaler capex enthusiasm has a ceiling, even after Microsoft’s blowout quarter (18% revenue growth, Azure past $100 billion, a path to positive free cash flow in fiscal 2027).
The tell: this wasn’t a broad reversal of Thursday’s rally. It was selective, concentrated profit-taking in the most extended, single-catalyst names, while the infrastructure layer — Vertiv, GE Vernova, Nvidia — kept grinding higher on demand that doesn’t hinge on one quarter’s guidance. Data-center landlords Equinix and Digital Realty cooled too, both down more than 2%, hinting at rotation out of REIT-structured AI real estate and into pure hardware infrastructure.
Traditional energy quietly outperformed the whole tape, with Chevron and Occidental both up more than 2% as crude firmed on Middle East tensions — a factor the Fed flagged this week as a risk to the inflation outlook heading into its September meeting.
TODAY’S TOP CALLS
VRT $241.57 (+6.18%) — Vertiv decoupled from the Micron-driven melt-up entirely, pushing toward fresh highs as the market rewards AI cooling and power infrastructure over single-name memory bets.
MU $823.03 (-5.90%) — Micron gave back roughly a third of Thursday’s 18% surge on reports that major hyperscalers are capping AI spending — the first real crack in the capex-is-infinite thesis.
NVDA $200.75 (+2.93%) — Nvidia extended its gain in a calm, tight range, reinforcing that the core GPU demand story is steadier than the volatility in memory names suggests.
